Join us for Ty Burr's take on contemporary cinema. If he had placed bets on the winners of this year's Academy Awards, Ty would be a wealthy man. In the March 7, 2010 Boston Sunday Globe Movies section, Burr went on record with "Will win" picks for best picture, best director, best actor, best actress, best supporting actor and best supporting actress, scoring one hundred per cent for the actual Oscar recipients. Perhaps more interesting than "Will win" are the other designations: "Should win," "Was robbed," and "Shouldn't be here." In these, Ty Burr considers talent on balance with Hollywood agendas.
Ty Burr's most recent book is The Best Old Movies for Families: A Guide to Watching Together. His career includes eleven years at Entertainment Weekly as the magazine's chief video critic, also covering movies, books, theater, music, and the Internet. While at Entertainment Weekly, Burr wrote The 100 Greatest Movies of All Time and coauthored The 100 Greatest Stars of All Time (with Alison Gwinn). He has written about film and other subjects for The New York Times, Spin, The Boston Phoenix, and other publications. Ty Burr's commentary combines an appreciation of cinema and stars from the past with a keen eye for their successors.
