A crowd of about 150 library fans gathered at the Highland Avenue library site on a cool and breezy Sunday, October 17, 2004, afternoon to witness a ceremonial groundbreaking for the reconstruction of the Needham Public Library.

Lois Sockol, Chair of the Board of Library Trustees, introduced several speakers: Greg Casey, chief of staff for Sen. Scott Brown; Gerald Wasserman, Board of Selectmen; George Kent, Permanent Public Building Committee; Margaret Pantridge, Friends of the Needham Public Library; Lois Bacon, Library Foundation of Needham; and Ann MacFate, Director of the Needham Public Library.

The Library Trustees and the other speakers then gathered for a traditional symbolic groundbreaking to kick off the construction phase of the Library’s reconstruction project.

A highlight of the afternoon was the Children’s Groundbreaking, in which dozens of children, wearing yellow construction hats supplied as souvenirs of the day, prepared the ground for the adult groundbreakers. Each participating child will receive a certificate noting the event.

The Groundbreaking Ceremony was supported by the Barbara and Arthur Hatch Fund.
