Friends present $150,000 leadership gift to the Library Foundation of Needham.

Friends of the Needham Public Library presented a donation of $150,000 to the Library Foundation of Needham (LFN) in a brief ceremony at Town Hall on May 10, 2005. It is the first major donation received for the Foundation’s campaign to establish a permanent fund for the Needham Library that is now under construction.

Margaret Pantridge, president of Friends of the Library, presented the “big check” to Lois Bacon, president of the LFN. Also present for the gift transaction were Friends’ treasurer, Keith McClelland, and LFN treasurer, Rachel Weinstock. The gift will be recognized through the naming of the “Friends’ Gallery” in the renovated Library. The Friends’ Gallery is located on the main floor and is the primary exhibition space of the Library.

“The Library Foundation of Needham, Inc. is very grateful for the enormous generosity of the Friends of the Needham Public Library,” said Mrs. Bacon. “A gift of this magnitude from the Friends so early in our campaign sends a strong signal to the community of the importance of building a permanent fund that will be used to provide programs and services beyond what the town’s appropriation allows.”

Ms. Pantridge noted the many years that Friends of the Library has been saving for a significant donation to a new library, adding, “We are delighted the day has finally arrived. We encourage other members of the community to consider making contributions to support this fabulous new resource for the town.”

The Library Foundation of Needham was established as a tax-exempt organization in 2004 to raise funds to provide financial resources above and beyond the annual town-funded budget. These funds will enhance the library’s programs, services, and collections for the benefit of the entire Needham community.
