Teen Room Renovation and Expansion Project

Needham Free Public Library
Teen Room Renovation and Expansion
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Teen Room Renovation and Expansion project?
The Needham Free Public Library is excited about the renovation and expansion of the Teen Room on the second floor from 800 square feet to 4,000 square feet. A new glass and solid wall will enclose the space and offer a variety of seating options as well as shelving and a service desk for staff. The Teen Room will have four areas for socializing, group study, quiet study, and crafting/programs.
Seating for more than 90 teens will include library carrels/cubicles, clusters of reading chairs, and banquettes with tables and adjustable seats. This will provide space for collaborative learning, tables with charging stations and quiet reading carrels, seating and a laptop study bar. We will also make upgrades to the HVAC system, lighting, furniture, and acoustics and install an interior wood system to cut down on solar glare.
How long will this take?
Construction is expected to start in September 2025 and be completed in February 2026. The new Teen Room is anticipated to open in March 2026.
How much will this cost and how is it being funded?
This construction project is budgeted at $2,386,000 which was approved at Annual Town Meeting in May 2025.
How will the Library provide teen patrons with spaces and collections during the construction project?
During the construction project, the Library will be using the Bosworth Room near the Highland Avenue entrance to house part of the teen collection and to provide seating and tables for teens to work and study. In addition, the Library will reserve the large Community Room on weekdays after school for teens to study. Also, part of the teen collection will be temporarily located on shelving in the reference department near the three study rooms.
Why is the Library undertaking a phased interior renovation?
Public libraries have grown and expanded in many ways since 2006 when the renovated Needham Free Public Library reopened. Over the past 20 years, we have seen many advances and transformations in technology, the use of space, and in collections. At the same time our patrons are coming to the Library with more expectations and needs to which we must respond.
Was a Feasibility Study or Master Plan completed first?
Yes, in 2022, Annual Town Meeting appropriated $60,000 to conduct a feasibility study for the library. The Final Report for the Needham Free Public Library Space Utilization Framework Study was completed by the designer Utile, Inc., in August 2023. A full copy of the report is available at the library reference desk and on the Library’s website:
NFPL Space Utilization Study
This study started in conjunction with the library’s FY2023-2027 Strategic Plan. The designer engaged in discussions with residents, patrons, staff, Library Trustees and the Friends of the Needham Library. Issues were identified and alternative designs were studied with conceptual cost estimates. Four priority projects were identified:
- Create a new dedicated Teen Area on the second floor
- Provide an improved Children’s Area on the first floor
- Improve the Rosemary Entrance and create a multipurpose room
- Improve the Highland Entrance and enhance staff workspace
Why was the Teen Room chosen to be the first renovation project?
While most public libraries find it challenging to reach and engage with teen library patrons, the Needham Free Public Library is fortunate to be a go-to destination for many teens. In addition to the 70-100 teens using the Library to work on group projects or to study individually after school, attendance at teen programs and the use of the teen collection continues to grow. The immediate need for additional space for teens to study as well as for programming and for the collection led to this project being chosen as the first renovation project. Also, this project’s design includes sound isolation, sound masking, and sound absorption.
What is the timing for future projects?
In the Fiscal Years 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), the library requested funding for the following projects:
Children’s Department Renovation: FY27–funding for design, FY28–funding for construction
Rosemary Street Entrance Renovation: FY29–funding for design, FY30–funding for construction
Highland Avenue Entrance Renovation: FY31–funding for design, FY32–funding for construction
How will this impact me?
- Seating: We will relocate chairs and tables from the future construction zone to other areas in the Library to ensure enough seating for patrons to use.
- Books: Most of the teen collection has been relocated on the second floor. Some of it has been put into on-site storage during construction. The adult graphic novel collection has been relocated to the first floor.
- Public Computers: Patrons will still be able to use the public computers as well as the printer, scanner, and photocopier in their existing locations.
- Noise Mitigation: As with any construction project, noise is to be expected throughout the timeline of the work. The noisiest work will occur before the Library opens. Work on the project will end Monday through Friday at 2:30 p.m. A temporary construction wall around the construction zone will be built to muffle the noise. Upon request, earplugs will be available.
- Dust Mitigation: A temporary construction wall will surround the construction zone from the floor to the ceiling. A construction dust extractor unit will be installed in one of the windows in the construction zone. The temporary construction wall will provide a constant negative pressure for dust control. Entry or exit to the construction area will have walk-off mats. Upon request, masks will be available.
How will Library events be impacted?
- For Kids: Events for kids will be held in the Community Room or in the Children’s Department. We will hold special monthly programs on Saturdays funded by the Library Foundation of Needham.
- For Teens: Events will be held in the Community Room as well as at nearby Town and community partner locations.
- For Adults: Most events will continue to be held during their regularly scheduled times in the Community Room. The Friends’ lecture series will continue to be held on Sundays.
